What does Kaizen mean?

Kaizen is a method from the Japanese management philosophy that refers to the continuous improvement and increase in efficiency in organizations and processes. The goal of Kaizen is to increase overall value and efficiency through continuous small improvements in all areas of the company. To do this, Kaizen relies on the participation of all employees and continuous monitoring and review of processes. The term Kaizen is made up of the words Kai (change) and Zen (good), which roughly means "change for the better".

What are the 5 fundamentals of Kaizen?

  1. Customer satisfaction Internal customers (colleagues, other departments, etc.) and external customers (end users) should be satisfied. The satisfaction of internal customers should improve cooperation within the company.

  2. Quality The quality of processes and products should be as high as possible. By monitoring and improving the processes, the overall quality should be increased.

  3. Process orientation The focus is not on the result, but on the processes that lead to the result. Processes are continuously monitored, analyzed and improved to achieve better results.

  4. Criticism orientation Criticism is seen as an opportunity and is therefore not only accepted, but is explicitly desired. Processes can be changed and improved by suggestions and criticism from all employees of the company.

  5. Standardization Processes within the company should not only be optimized, but also standardized. This should ensure or increase the quality of all processes.
